By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

West Point, Ga.-based Knology, Inc., a provider of interactive communications and entertainment services, reportedly announced that it has upgraded its Internet service in Huntsville to the DOCSIS 3.0 platform, in order to launch 50Mbps business service for increased Internet speed in the region.

Data over cable service interface specification is an international telecommunications standard that allows the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing Cable TV system. This standard facilitates cable television operators to provide Internet access over their existing hybrid fiber coaxial infrastructure.

Knology’s (News - Alert) implementation of DOCSIS 3.0 platform utilizes channel-bonding technology, which is leveraging company’s existing high-speed infrastructure. According to officials, Huntsville is the first of company’s 12 markets to get this new technology.

Due to this up gradation, there has been increase in bandwidth speeds of up to 50 Mbps on the downstream and 5 Mbps on the upstream, thereby enabling Knology business Internet customers to experience greater productivity, said officials.

In the release, Ron Johnson, vice president of sales for Knology, Inc., said, “DOCSIS 3.0 can dramatically help to improve productivity for our customers by leveraging this super fast and reliable upgrade by Knology, and opening the door to new and emerging applications such as video conferencing, telemedicine and other business centric needs.”

Some of the other features with this up gradation include security enhancements, like support for 128 bit Advanced Encryption Security, as well as IPv6, the new Internet Protocol addressing method, already seen in many of today’s applications. ?

Furthermore, DOCSIS 3.0 is part of the Plexus family of Seriously Advanced Business Communications.

Officials with Knology also said that the company is automatically increasing the upload speeds for Basic and Edge business customers to 1Mbps, as part of the up gradation investment.

Knology business customers, both new and current, have the option to choose from four different levels of service in Huntsville, namely Business Ultimate (50 Mbps down/5 Mbps up), Business Max (30 Mbps down/5 Mbps up), Business Select (16 Mbps down/2 Mbps up), and Business Basic (8 Mbps down/1 Mbps up).

Johnson added, “This system upgrade puts both existing and new Knology Business Internet customers at the highest level of speed, security and performance. This is the latest example of Knology being the first to bring leading edge technology to the Huntsville business community.”

Apart from offering advanced broadband networks, Knology also offers more than 200 channels of digital cable TV, local and long distance digital telephone service with the enhanced voice messaging features, and more.
