Sigma Designs Completes EoC Solution on Single Chip

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Sigma Designs (News - Alert) is a provider of system-on-chip, or “SoC,” solutions that are used to bring entertainment and control throughout the home. Recently, it has announced its first complete Ethernet over Coax, or “EoC,” solution on a single chip. Fast EoC, Sigma's most sophisticated EoC technology which can be used in broadband access solutions to multi-dwelling unit, or “MDU,” environments, is integrated in the CopperGate CG3210M  chip and the new CopperGate CG3310M  chip.

This technology can be used for enabling low-cost endpoint designs, creating new revenue opportunities for service providers, and allowing the cost-effective provision of advanced Triple-Play services such as IPTV (News - Alert), VOD, VoIP, and broadband internet access.

It supports AES based encryption, DSLF TR-69, and IGMP/MLD snooping and filtering.

Its effective data rate per band is 160 Mbit/s and it uses a Point-to-multipoint topology; up to 126 endpoints per master per band. This Fast EoC technology can be embedded into MDU masters, ONTs, MDU end points, set-top boxes, and even on televisions. Already, it is being implemented by 14 different companies including Cisco (News - Alert), Tatung, Sercomm, x3me and KingType. Their products will be publicized in the Sigma booth at CCBN or Convergence India

Based upon the HomePNA/ITU G.9954 standard, the CopperGate CG3310M is planned to meet the highly price sensitive markets of China, India, Brazil and other up-and-coming markets. The CG3310M will help the operators to deliver high performance HomePNA (News - Alert)-based EoC broadband services at a much lower cost per subscriber than in any other competing technology.

According to Gabi Hilevitz, vice president and general manager for Home Connectivity Business Unit, Sigma Designs HomePNA-based EoC solutions are gaining traction around the world. These design wins are a clear indicator of this traction, Hilevitz said.

Sigma Designs is a provider of SoC solutions which include media processing, wired and wireless networking, video image processing, and home control. Sigma Designs has direct sales representatives in the United States, Brazil, China, Europe (Denmark), Israel, Japan, Taiwan and in other potential markets. Also, it has distributors in Singapore, Korea, Russia and India.
