TiVo Promotes Desperate Discounts

By Juliana Kenny, TMCnet Web Editor

Sustaining severe subscriber loss recently, TiVo (News - Alert) will supply major discounts on DVRs throughout the rest of 2010. Cutting $200 off retail prices on DVRs for the rest of 2010, the company is hoping to retain customers by applying 66 percent discounts on the hardware.

TiVo has experienced significant subscriber loss over the last few years, losing up to 666,000 subscribers over the year ending on July 31. Now, with 2.38 million customers, the company is scrambling for retention. Having lost 22 percent of its customer base, the company is promoting some serious sales including selling the TiVo Premiere box for $99.99 with a year’s contract of $19.99 a month. The box is normally $299.99.

Cutting prices almost in half on more expensive items such as the Premiere XL, TiVo is bringing the normally-priced $499 item down to $299 with a year’s contract of $19.99 a month.

Beginning today, November 15, and ending December 31, the promotion will be available through the company’s website as well as other retailers such as Best Buy (News - Alert). All offers still apply early termination fees.

TiVo stated that the boxes are, "far superior to what is available from most cable operators and other single-purpose Internet-connected set-top boxes." Striking deals with Comcast, Cox, DirecTV, RCN (News - Alert), and Suddenlink Communications, TiVo enables service providers to sell TiVo-based services and resell its DVRs. The boxes also provide access to broadband-delivered content including services from Amazon.com (News - Alert), Netflix, YouTube.
