BesTV Uses Dolby Digital Plus Audio for HDTV

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Dolby Digital Plus technology is being used by BesTV. Home theater–quality multichannel audio will be delivered with this technology in Guangdong Province.

An announcement in this regard has been made by Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (News - Alert) BesTV is a premier HD IPTV live and video-on-demand (VOD) service provider in China. BesTV also plans to use Dolby Digital Plus technology in other areas of China.

In a press release, Li Huai Yu, general manager of BesTV, said, “BesTV is devoted to delivering the best new features to our customers for a better user experience. We hope to offer our customers an immersing entertainment experience at home and to advance IPTV (News - Alert) industry development in China.”

Dolby Digital Plus enables a rich, multichannel audio. BesTV’s extensive choice of entertainment and playback features will be provided a high-quality complement with this technology.

In a statement, Mahesh Sundaram, vice president of Asia Pacific at Dolby Laboratories, said, “By collaborating with BesTV, Dolby is helping to deliver an exceptional HD audio experience that Chinese consumers have come to expect with their home cinema systems. We look forward to assisting BesTV in setting new benchmarks for video and audio in next-generation broadcasting through a new level of speed, quality, and efficiency.”

Top TV and set-top box manufacturers around the world have adopted Dolby Digital Plus. The technology provides these manufacturers with surround sound for next-generation television. Dolby Digital Plus has been established as the broadcast audio standard for HDTV services in Europe, France, Italy, England, Spain, and Sweden.

Dolby has been committed to its implementation of licensing programs in China. These are for local encoder, chipset, and set-top box or STB manufacturers. The Dolby Digital Plus broadcast licensing program in China has 30 system licensees participating as of October 2010.

The evolving demands of content delivery are met by the scalable technology of Dolby Digital Plus. Dolby Digital Plus is measurably more efficient than Dolby Digital especially where bandwidth is at a premium. Broadcast operators are therefore able to deliver more HD programs. Sound quality and efficiency are optimized by Dolby Digital Plus by extending the capabilities of Dolby Digital. A richer, more compelling audio experience is therefore provided.
