News Corp Unveils Spanish-Language Television Network, FoxMundo

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

There may not be a name in today’s media that strikes more fear or talk of conspiracy than “Rupert Murdoch.”

The media mogul has built himself quite the empire, and with it has come quite a few whispers of something sinister involved in his rise to power. On occasion, there actually are sinister happenings in the Murdoch empire, and when these actions are proved it only fosters rampant rumors.

The latest move by the Murdoch media empire doesn’t seem all that sinister on the surface, but could be seen by certain factions as another step in a rather diabolical plan.

Murdoch’s news empire, known as News Corp (News - Alert), has announced the launch of its first Spanish-language television network. Known as MundoFox, the network has been launched on 50 television stations to start, and will be a direct challenge to Spanish-language stations such as Univision and Telemundo.

MundoFox has launched in several of the country’s larger markets , including Los Angeles and New York, reportedly reaching about 11.1 million Hispanic households in the U.S.

The launch will be able to reach about 80 percent of the total Hispanic families in the country.

Univision is currently the top-ranked Spanish language television network in the U.S., reaching just over 96 percent of the Spanish market. Telemundo currently comes in second and reaches an estimated 94 percent.

FoxMundo’s launch will be taking on another media empire in NBC. NBCUniversal owns Telemundo.

FoxMundo is actually a partnership between News Corp and the Colombia, based RCN (News - Alert) Television Group. The 50-50 deal means that programs that are directly produced by RCN such as El Capo and Kdabra will only air on FoxMundo.

More exclusive programming from the Colombian network will be airing on Murdoch’s newest endeavor over the next few years.
