TiVo and GCI Collaborate to Bring Advance Multimedia Experience to Users

By Tanya Palta, TMCnet Contributing Writer

TiVo, Inc. and General Communication, Inc. have partnered together to bring TiVo’s HD interface and other multimedia features to GCI’s (News - Alert) subscriber base. The collaboration entails TiVo to exclusively deliver GCI's next-gen whole home television solution and user experience for GCI’s TV offerings across every screen.

The partnership is seen as a win-win solution for both companies, since GCI happens to be one of top 20 largest cable operators in the Unites States and TiVo (News - Alert) carved a niche for itself in the advanced television entertainment market.

The TiVo whole home solution will feature the Premiere Q 4-tuner gateway DVR, TiVo Mini low-cost IP set-tops and the TiVo Stream, which facilitates access to content across tablets and smartphones in the home.

GCI seeks to utilize TiVo Software and Service in concurrence with the Pace XG1 multi-tuner gateway with integrated DOCSIS and transcoding capabilities. This in a nutshell means that the GCI and TiVo offering is an amalgamation of linear cable television with integrated on demand and broadband content via TiVo's user interface. The collaboration guarantees a reliable experience for any content on any screen and will also integrate personalized recommendations and powerful search and discovery capabilities.

"GCI customers deserve the very best television viewing experience possible and the advanced features of the TiVo product will allow us to provide that," said Bob Ormberg, Vice President of Content, Product Management, GCI.

"After examining the various advanced TV UI solutions for our subscribers, we determined that TiVo's advanced user interface, leading whole home solution and hardware flexibility combined to create the best option available. Additionally, the simplicity with which TiVo presents a vast world of content to every screen, including tablets and smart phones, not only meets our needs today, but is an ideal fit for the future as television evolves."

David Sandford, VP and GM for TiVo's Service Provider Business stated, "We are pleased to work with GCI in bringing the best advanced television experience to their customers, and this agreement builds on our successful deployments with other operators. Both GCI and TiVo are committed to innovation and we look forward to bringing TiVo to Alaska."
