MOCA Welcomes DIRECTV into its Board of Directors

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

In the world of home entertainment networking, the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) is accepted as the universal standard. All three pay TV segments – cable, satellite and IPTV (News - Alert) – adopted the standard to offer an excellent user experience via parameterized quality of service (PQoS).

With 60 members worldwide, MoCA represents the entire home entertainment network value chain, comprising service providers, OEMs, consumer electronics companies and chip vendors.

DIRECTV is one of the promoter members that joined the Alliance in 2008. The company has now been awarded a place on MoCA’s Board of Directors.

As an important member of MoCA, DIRECTV has been deploying devices integrating MoCA technology since 2009. California-based DIRECTV provides television and audio services to subscribers through satellite transmissions. At the end of 2011, DirecTV (News - Alert) had 19.89 million subscribers across the U.S. and Latin America.

All these households use DIRECTV set-top boxes and adaptors integrating MoCA technology.

“MoCA technology is and will continue to be a critical element of our whole home DVR expansion throughout our footprint. We look forward to helping the organization in its mission of becoming a worldwide standard,” vice president of Technology & Ventures at DIRECTV, John Norin, said in a statement.

Norin will represent DIRECTV on the MoCA Board.

“DIRECTV continues to drive the Alliance and MoCA technology forward as a worldwide standard within the connected home. We look forward to their contribution and direction as we grow internationally,” said MoCA president Charles Cerino.

Recently, Intel Corporation joined the MoCA as a Promoter member. Jim Crammond, chief technology officer at Gateway Solutions within Intel's (News - Alert) Service Provider Division, will represent Intel on the Board of Directors.
