Time Warner Cable Preps On-the-Go TV Everywhere for Android

By Tara Seals, TMCnet Contributor

Time Warner Cable is prepping a major TV Everywhere upgrade for Android (News - Alert) users, expected to roll out as soon as next Tuesday. The cable MSO is adding access to more than 4,000 video-on-demand (VOD) TV shows and movies as well as live TV and on-demand support for older Android devices (supporting video playback on 98 percent of all Android devices running Android 2.2 or higher).

The updated TWC TV app, available in the Google (News - Alert) Play store, most notably will let users stream content live or on-demand, outside of the home. “Some of this content will even be available while you¹re away from home mirroring the experience we provide in our TWC TV app for iOS,” wrote Time Warner's (News - Alert) director of digital communications, Jeff Simmermon, in a blog post.

While the 4,000 subscription and free VOD titles will be delivered in the home from more than 90 different providers, out-of-home access will be limited to “selected” on-demand and live TV channels, including more than 1,100 on-demand TV shows and movies from 26 networks (like Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Spike) and a dozen or so live TV news, sports and entertainment channels such as BBC America, Pac-12, and TVGuide Network. Users can also access local TWC news channels like NY1 in New York City (these vary by market; but the providers are the same as the ones for the iOS app.)

Out of home access is also restricted to Wi-Fi connections—there’s no support for 3G/4G.

TWC is also making improvements to live TV mini guide, so that users can filter the live TV mini guide by genre (action, comedy, sports and so on) or recently watched channels. Users also can sort the live TV mini guide by network or show title.
