CableWiFi Agreement Creates Largest WiFi Network in the U.S.

By Brian Anderson, TMCnet Contributing Writer

CableWiFi, the combined WiFi network of Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox (News - Alert) Communications and Bright House Networks, announced today that their network has exceeded more than 150,000 hotspots in major cities across the nation, making it the largest WiFi network in the United States.

“With the ubiquity of wireless technology in consumer devices, our customers have the benefit of being able to access the largest Wi-Fi network in the U.S. to connect them to family, friends and the information they need,” said Tom Nagel, Senior Vice President of Business Development at Comcast (News - Alert) Cable.

The CableWiFi network has tripled in size since the project began last year; with hotspots in various densely populated areas in major cities across the nation will provide customers with the convenience of having the option to connect to the internet wherever they wish.

“With the growing number of mobile devices, customers want access to reliable high-speed Internet at home and on the go.” Kelly Williams, Vice President of Product Strategy and Management at Cox Communications. “(CableWifi) provides an even greater value to high-speed Internet customers over the next few months. Through these Wi-Fi networks, our customers will benefit from having access to Wi-Fi that is complementary to their cellular plans and experience.”

There are no signs of the Wi-Fi alliance slowing down anytime soon. Comcast alone has already unveiled plans for millions of Wi-Fi hotspots through a neighborhood hotspot initiative, hoping to provide nearly 20 million customers with internet access whenever and wherever it’s needed.

Beginning its operation in May 2012, “CableWiFi” has an ongoing objective to continue to grow the number of Wi-Fi hotspots all over the country. With both indoor and outdoor hotspots, the locations are based on high-traffic locations in major cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Subscribers to any of the internet providers that participate in CableWiFi can find their nearest hotspot via their provider’s Wi-Fi finder app.
