VisualOn Helps You Enjoy Video Content Anywhere

By Rich Steeves, TMCnet Managing Editor

While at The Cable Show in Washington, DC, I heard a lot of common phrases tossed around. One of those was “TV Everywhere,” which was one of the buzziest terms on the floor. Each company, it seemed, had something to say on the topic, but one of the companies that stuck out to me was VisualOn (News - Alert). I had a chance to speak with Deepak Das, senior director of marketing at VisualOn, about the company and its position in the space.

VisualOn started in 2003 with an original focus on developing codecs. In the past 10 years, it has evolved to work toward the integration of that technology in a cross-platform environment, creating a player that addressed a number of requirements. Das stated that VisualOn supplies the codec expertise and has created a player framework used by content providers that integrates disparate components such as audio, video and more.

With the modern fragmentation of devices used by consumers, content providers have difficulty supporting all formats, especially when considering closed captioning, the capturing of analytics, add insertion, etc. But, with VisualOn’s reskinnble player, content providers can put their own skin on the solution, add in user info and, when the viewer hits play, VisualOn takes over the technical aspects.

The Santa Clara, California-based company also has offices in Shanghai, and its software-based player can capture analytics inherent to each individual device. Its player is used by Cablevision, the Verizon (News - Alert) NFL app and more. In the end, Das said, VisualOn wants to be the cross-content player that all providers use across device types. And, with a strong software solution in their arsenal, they may just have a chance to do so.
