DSAT Cinema, IDC Join to Enhance Digital Cinema Delivery in Europe

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

DSAT Cinema will be ordering more than 1,000 IDC (News - Alert) or International Datacasting’s SuperFlex pro video receivers to be installed across Europe over the coming years. This is a multi-year deal which will enhance IDC’s position as a provider of digital cinema satellite technology in Europe.

Fabrice Testa, CEO of DSAT Cinema, said, “We believe a mutually strong partnership with IDC plays a critical role in the success of our expansion plans to bring smart, cost-effective solutions to cinemas via satellite, virtually anywhere in Europe.”

A joint venture company of Eutelsat (News - Alert) and dcinex, DSAT Cinema enables satellite delivery of films and live events. DSAT Cinema leverages IDC’s end-to-end technology solutions for delivering about 300 films and 50 live broadcasts from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre and the Royal Opera House in London.

IDC and DSAT Cinema strive to enhance global entertainment using cutting edge satellite distribution technology for delivering digital cinema content. IDC’s SuperFlex Pro Video XTR receiver is an integrated, one-box solution, which can integrate with DSAT Cinema’s IDC headend equipment in France and Italy.

This compact receiver encompasses a video decoder, file receiver and storage all in one device. The IDC receivers which are controlled by the DSAT Cinema network operations center ensures secure delivery of the content, said officials.

IDC handles all the hardware and software needs to streamline the digital content distribution. The IDC receiver makes the content delivery cost effective as it allows digital cinema package (DCP) file delivery and normal live events in 2D or 3D to be provided via two different satellite carriers at the same time.

Doug Lowther, CEO of IDC remarked, “Our long term relationship with DSAT Cinema is the kind of partnership we like to have with our customers. This alliance also supports our plans to continue developing and enhancing IDC’s advanced digital cinema content distribution technology.”

The collaborative partnership between IDC and DSAT Cinema keeps IDC ahead in advanced digital cinema technology and allows DSAT Cinema to expand on a high quality network using IDC solutions.

SAT Cinema announced recently that 1,000 cinema complexes in Europe, representing approximately 7,000 screens, are now fully equipped for satellite reception. With the steady expansion of digital cinema, the dematerialized transmission of films via satellite is a secure solution for broadcasting content to an unlimited number of cinemas in a given coverage area.
