Sky Italia Showcases Delivery of Ultra HD Content

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Sky Italia recently announced that it has entered into a strategic collaboration with Thomson (News - Alert) Video Networks. Sky Italia will be conducting a test wherein Ultra HD content will be delivered using the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression capabilities of Thomson Video Networks' ViBE VS7000 encoding/transcoding platform. The ViBE VS7000 aims to help Sky Italia generate a real-world environment for total Ultra HD delivery, ranging from content acquirement and transcoding in HEVC to delivery and display on 4K television sets.

In a statement, Massimo Bertolotti, head of engineering and innovation at Sky Italia, said, "HEVC is the wave of the future for Ultra HD and 4K content delivery, but until very recently this type of demonstration was not possible because there were no viable solutions for creating a real-world workflow in an actual production environment. This has changed now that Thomson Video Networks is shipping its ViBE VS7000 with the ability to encode live and file-based content in HEVC."

Thomson Video Networks' ViBE VS7000 video system is one of the first implementations of the HEVC compression standard. This system is designed to help in decreasing operators' OPEX for devliering a broad array of convergent TV services like WebTV and OTT, along with conventional IPTV (News - Alert) and cable applications. ViBE VS7000 video system brings together Thomson's popular next-generation compression platform with real-time, broadcast-quality encoding; ground-breaking video preprocessing; and extremely speedy file transcoding.

The ViBE VS7000 will deliver 4K file transcoding in HEVC. The Ultra HD HEVC-encoded content will be transmitted by Thomson Video Networks' Sapphire stream server for display on Ultra HDTV sets.

Christophe Delahousse, president, Thomson Video Networks said, "Sky Italia is the perfect partner with which to demonstrate to our joint customers and the media industry that Ultra HD is a technology whose time has come. As this demonstration will show, the advanced 4K HEVC encoding capabilities of our ViBE VS7000 make it the ideal platform for media companies as they adapt their operations for HD and Ultra HD content delivery on the full range of devices and networks."
