Android Will See Aereo This Week

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Aereo is designed to make watching TV simple. Basically all you have to do is go online and you are set to watch TV. It even goes so far as to provide you with DVR (digital video recording) services. Instead of a large dish or antenna on your roof, you use your Internet connection to access an antenna in the clouds – well, I should really say, in the cloud.

By launching Aereo, you connect to one of many antennas. All of them are connected to DVRs running over super-fast Internet connections. This eliminates the need for any additional hardware. In addition to using all of the popular Internet browsers, until now you could also use your iPhone (News - Alert), iPad or iPod touch.

In addition, if you have an AppleTV or Roku, you can watch Aereo on the big screen. Apple TV is a digital media receiver developed and sold by Apple (News - Alert) Inc. It is a small box designed to play digital content from the iTunes Store. You can also watch shows from a multitude of sights such as Netflix.

Roku is an American, privately held, consumer electronics company based in Saratoga, Calif. Roku manufactures a variety of digital media receivers that allow customers to access internet streamed video or audio services through televisions.

Beginning tomorrow, Oct. 22 you can now enjoy the same freedom and comfort on your Android (News - Alert) device. The app, which will be released in a public beta, will be available to all Aereo members residing in markets where Aereo’s technology has launched.

The app will be compatible with devices running Android operating system 4.2 or higher. You can also use the new app on any Android device to connect Roku to an Aereo account.

On Oct. 10 Aereo CEO and founder Chet Kanojia said, “We know consumers have been waiting a long time for an Aereo Android app and today, we’re happy to announce its release later this month. At Aereo, we believe consumers should have more choice and control over how they watch television and a big part of that is expanding the universe of devices that they can use to access Aereo’s remote antenna and DVR technology. This year, our focus has been on growing our footprint across the country. It’s been an exciting year for the Aereo team as we’ve expanded beyond the east coast and into the south and west. Our future is bright and we remain as committed and passionate as ever to creating innovative and simple to use technology for our consumers to use to access live TV online.”
