ViXS and Wyplay Unveil Media Gateway Solution Supporting Ultra HD 4K and HEVC-Main 10

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

ViXS Systems, which designs media processing semiconductor solutions for the broadcasting and consumer electronics industries, has formed partnership with Wyplay, a developer of software solutions for IPTV (News - Alert), cable, satellite and terrestrial TV operators and broadcasters around the world, to deliver an innovative media gateway solution.

The partnership, according to the company, has created the industry’s first media gateway solution with full support for ultra HD 4K and HEVC 10-bit media processing that boasts 50 percent reduction in bandwidth consumption.

At the core of the media gateway is Frog, Wyplay’s open platform system middleware for pay-for-TV operators. Frog aims to free all actors in the TV ecosystem from being locked into proprietary solutions, the company said. Together the combination of ViXS’ XCode 6400 SoC and Frog offers service providers a dynamic platform for deploying Ultra HD with legacy content support.

ViXS’ XCode 6400 allows telco and satellite operators to deploy Ultra HD 4K content and give their subscribers an unprecedented viewing experience. The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) brings about 50 percent bandwidth savings, the company said.

The high-performance transcoding capability of the XCode 6400 provides support for legacy non-HEVC devices already in the home, giving operators increased options for managing the transition to new services using Ultra HD 4K.

The media gateway solution enables service providers to launch new content and services, reduce operating costs and protect legacy equipment in the home.

“Working with Wyplay highlights how ViXS is driving the future of the home media gateway market by providing service operators a full software and hardware gateway solution that will usher in the next era of content and services," said David Jones, VP Marketing, ViXS Systems, in a statement.

Frog by Wyplay can be customized to give a unique look and feel for specific operator requirements. The solution is already being deployed to more than 10 million subscribers at Canal+, Belgacom (News - Alert), SFR, and Vodafone. It will be accessible free of charge for evaluation and development purposes.

The software can leverage legacy set-top box (STB) architecture as well as run on newer platforms. Combined with ViXS’ new XCode 6400 chip, this solution now offers service providers a clear path for future deployment, while protecting legacy support.

ViXS is demonstrting the XCode 6400 SoC integrated with Wyplay’s media framework at CES (News - Alert) 2014.
