Korean Cable Customers to See Increased Bandwidth

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributor

A Korean telecommunications company, Hanaro Telecom (News - Alert), announced today that it’s deployed Harmonic’s “Narrowcast Services Gateway 9000” universal edgeQAMs in an effort to increase bandwidth offered to cable subscribers.

Hanaro serves about 6 million subscribers through cable and DSL networks. The company’s wideband DOCSIS 2.0B modular cable modem termination system service is capable of delivering 150 Mbps or more, company officials say. The M-CMTS is fully operational and has been well received by Hanaro customers, they say.

Harmonic’s (News - Alert) NSG universal edge platform is designed to expand high-speed data capacity while freeing up critical network resources for cable IPTV and other advanced services, according to the company.

Hanaro officials say they chose Harmonic for NSG 9000’s integrated DOCSIS 3.0 timing interface, which maximizes channel capacity by enabling clock synchronization in M-CMTS applications. The Korean telecommunications company also was impressed by the superior RF performance of the NSG platform, which exceeds the DOCSIS RF Interface (DRFI) specification in several critical RF parameters, and NSG’s capability to be implemented in a Direct-to-Edge cable IPTV (News - Alert) environment.

Chan Woong Park, a senior vice president at Hanaro said that the Harmonic solution allows his company to deliver a superior broadband data service with very little additional investment or operating costs. Harmonic’s NSG 9000 has been widely deployed throughout Hanaro’s network, Park said, and its transition to a wideband M-CMTS service has been smooth and efficient.

Gil Katz, a director for Harmonic, said Hanaro is an innovative operator at the forefront of IP–based service delivery.

Katz said that Harmonic is rolling out M-CMTS services to more than 25 operators throughout Asia, Europe and North America, using DOCSIS 3.0 or legacy DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems. He said that the flexible NSG platform is attractive to forward-looking operators such as Hanaro, who provide customers world-class data service while investing in a platform that can scale to meet future requirements.

Harmonic Inc. officials say their company provides versatile and high performance video solutions that enable service providers to deliver the next generation of broadcast and on-demand services including high definition, video-on-demand, network personal video recording and time-shifted TV.
