Taiwan Optical Platform Group Picks Enablence Technologies Solution for FTTP Deployment

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Enablence Technologies, a supplier of fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) equipment for residential and business services, has installed its Trident7 Universal Access Platform for the fiber-to-the-business (FTTB) networks within the Taiwan Optical Platform Group (TOP) service areas in central Taiwan.

TOP, formerly named Taiwan Infrastructure Network Provider (TINP), is one of the largest cable provider groups in central Taiwan, comprising five TV operators with service area covering the cities of Taichung, Nantou, and Yunlin, as well as other areas in the region.

TOP's existing main business items include broadband Internet access service, online gaming, e-learning, and co-location services. Emerging services being launched include VoIP, wireless broadband, digital video broadcasting (DVB) and video on demand (VoD), community e-commerce, remote security monitoring, and triple-play residential services. TOP has its own multi-gigabit fiber backbone network for robust service connection, network restoration, and increasing bandwidth requirements.

TOP's service areas cover more than 600,000 homes in central Taiwan. The company's first deployment of a FTTx network will employ Enablence Technologies' Trident7 IEEE 802.3 GE-PON (EFM PON) standard Compact OLT (COLT (News - Alert)) platform to offer triple-play services for residential and business customers in apartment and office buildings.
The targeted service area will be more than 300 buildings with 20-60 subscribers in each building.

The Trident7 platform is reportedly the only optical access platform on the market capable of supporting IEEE (News - Alert) 802.3 GE-PON (EFM PON), ITU G.984 GPON, and IEEE 802.3 Point-to-Point networks from a common platform. Trident7 products began shipping to customers in the second half of 2006, and the platform is already deployed by more than 50 customers in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

“We are thrilled to be working with TOP through our system-integration partner in Taiwan, Hiway Broadband Co., Ltd. in Taiwan,” said Arvind Chhatbar, CEO of Enablence, in a statement. “This project illustrates how the Trident7 platform is gaining traction not only in the U.S., but also internationally.”

In this deployment TOP will roll-out Enablence's ONTs with its own PLC transceiver units.

“This is a key milestone for Enablence as we integrate our components into its FTTx Network Division Products,” added Chhatbar.

Enablence Technologies designs, manufactures and sells optical components and systems. With corporate headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, the company has two divisions, the FTTx Network Division and the Optical Components & Subsystems Division, which provide products for access, metro and the long haul optical communications applications. The company's component products rely on proprietary planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology to integrate multiple components into a single optical chip to address the global rollout of Fiber to the Home (FTTH).

The FTTx Network division is a major player in optical broadband access systems, with an expanding Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) product portfolio featuring a variety of architectural options, based on IP and Ethernet standards, for triple-play voice, video and data services.

The company's Trident7 Universal Access Platform is rapidly gaining market share around the world with service providers in the PTT (Public Telephone & Telegraph), IOC (Independent Operating Carrier), CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carier), MSO (Multiple System Operator), municipal, utility and real estate development categories.
