TransTeleCom Company and NTT Begin Operating Undersea Cable Linking Russia, Japan

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

TransTeleCom Company CJSC (TTK), a Russian telecommunications backbone operator and NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) are jointly running the Hokkaido-Sakhalin Cable System (HSCS), which began commercial operation on July 3rd.

The HSCS links directly the telecom networks of the two companies through an undersea cable between Nevelsk, Sakhalin in Russia and Ishikari, Hokkaido, Japan. The companies started constructing the fiber-optic submarine cable HSCS together last year and the work was successfully completed in December.

The HSCS measures 570 km in length and has a capacity of 640 Gbps. This cable system offers NTT Com the shortest route between Europe and Japan. The existing cable route was through southern Asia and the United States connecting the cable to the TTK’s backbone network in Russia. That setup was more than 55,000 km long.

The HSCS route is expected to be highly reliable and to enable services like global leased line. NTT Com will be offering additional Arcstar Global Leased Line Service using the new route. This will reduce the latency in the company’s backbone by 20 to 30 percent when compared to the existing, longer routes.

The HSCS route is being added to the backbone of NTT Com’s secure scalable Arcstar Global IP-VPN Service (MPLS) within a few months. It will also be added to NTT Com’s global IP Tier 1 network, to cover Asia-Pacific and North America. This will connect to major Internet service providers (ISPs) throughout the world.

NTT Communications Corporation delivers voice, data and IP services. The company has expertise in managed networks, hosting and IP networking services and also in IPv6 technology. Its global infrastructure includes Arcstar private networks and a Tier 1 IP backbone (connected with major ISPs worldwide). Both these networks reach more than 150 countries, as well as secure data centers in Asia, North America and Europe.

TransTeleCom Company CJSC (TTK) operates and services the largest fiber networks in Russia, which is 55,000 km long. The network is laid along the country’s railway line and has more than 1,000 access nodes in Russia and also connects Europe and Asia. The company occupies a considerable segment in the trunk internet access and also in the IP VPN market.
