By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

California-based Harmonic announced that the U.S. cable service provider, Bresnan Communications, has benefited by adding Harmonic’s Narrowcast Service Gateway (News - Alert) (NSG) 9000 and 9116 edgeQAMs with Privacy Mode encryption.

Bresnan Communications’ new addition is said to have increased its video-on-demand (VOD) service capacity in United States.

Harmonic’s (News - Alert) NSG EdgeQAMs with Privacy Mode is said to have also enhanced security, reliability and performance at network edge. The NSG’s integrated support for real-time encryption at the network edge is the reason behind Bresnan’s reliable and efficient protection of VOD assets, as they are transmitted to the home, said the company.

Bresnan Communications is a broadband communications company that offers advanced digital and high-speed Internet services. The company has also offers digital video recorder service, high-definition TV and/or video-on-demand to two-thirds of its homes-passed. The company also serves the business community via its Business Services and Advertising Sales divisions.

California-based Harmonic Inc. is a provider of high performance video solutions that facilitates service providers to efficiently deliver next generation of broadcast and on-demand services, such as high definition, video-on-demand, network personal video recording and time-shifted TV.

The flexibility of NSG 9000 universal edgeQAM platform offers Bresnan with the flexibility to migrate to a modular cable modem termination system (M-CMTS) architecture in the future as well.

Both NSG models are used to perform a variety of other functions at the network edge that also includes multiplexing, program routing, PCR (News - Alert) restamping, QAM modulation and RF up-conversion.

Bresnan utilizes VoD application to differentiate their services, increase customer satisfaction and even generate new revenue streams.

Harmonic’s NSG systems that have been deployed by cable operators support more than three million concurrent VoD sessions. The NSG systems also enable Privacy Mode encryption at the network edge to effectively protect the on-demand content against content piracy, said the company.

“As we were planning the expansion of our VoD architecture, two requirements were critical: the ability to deliver a secure and robust on-demand service today and to support other future applications such as modular CMTS to deliver more bandwidth in the future. The NSG 9000 satisfies these requirements,” said Pragash Pillai, Vice President of Strategic Engineering for Bresnan, in the statement.

“The popularity of anytime viewing capabilities continues to grow, and Harmonic remains focused on enabling leading operators like Bresnan to offer a high quality, personalized on-demand video experience for the consumer,” said Yoav Derazon, Senior Manager of Cable Strategy and Solutions for Harmonic Inc, in the statement.

Derazon added: “Our family of NSG edgeQAMs offers unparalleled RF performance and flexibility to support a greater variety of applications at the edge. Combined with the heritage of edgeQAM success and technology development pioneered by Harmonic, these benefits make the NSG the solution of choice.”

Harmonic’s digital video, broadband optical access and software solutions facilitates cable, satellite, broadcast and telecom service providers to increase revenues and lower operational expenditures and thereby offers consumers with personalized viewing experience.
