Time Warner Cable Deploys PowerBoost for Turbo Customers

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor

North Texas-based Time Warner (News - Alert) Cable announced the launch of a new technology, PowerBoost, which facilitates the Road Runner Turbo customers to temporarily experience faster download speeds than their current speed of 10 Mbps, free of cost.

Time Warner Cable is a provider of Digital Home Phone, Internet and television to the North Texas community.

After the deployment of PowerBoost, the Turbo customers can leverage download speeds of 16 Mbps from 10 Mbps, while downloading large files from the Internet when network capacity is available.

PowerBoost is said to be a patent-pending technology from Comcast (News - Alert) network. The technology allows users to experience faster connection speeds even while downloading and uploading large files to the Internet.

PowerBoost is said to leverage additional capacity that is already built into Comcast's advanced network. Comcast has designed its network in such a way that it provides high-speeds when usage levels are at their peak.

According to Comcast, the network that is rarely maxed out allows the users to take advantage of the extra bandwidth when it's available. But when it's not, the networks still provides the lower guaranteed rates. All this is possible because of Comcast's advanced high-capacity network.

"We are very excited to be delivering the free, time-saving feature to our Road Runner Turbo customers," said Robert V. Moel, North Texas division president, in a statement. "PowerBoost will jumpstart a large file download reducing overall download time, and giving users more time to enjoy the multitude of media available online, including that made available through RoadRunner.com."

PowerBoost is said to be compatible with standard DOCSIS 1.1 cable modems and above. It is also compatible with Time Warner Cable's certified home networking devices.

Time Warner Cable officials also said that the speed offered by PowerBoost is in relation to the level of Road Runner service a customer subscribes to. Road Runner Turbo customers with a current speed of 10 Mbps can enjoy PowerBoost up to 16 Mbps, as said above and once a PowerBoost is completed the download that is in progress will continue at the normal provisioned speed.
