Azalea Deploys Wireless Broadband Network in China

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

Azalea Networks reportedly has announced a broadband wireless network deployment covering key areas throughout Hangzhou, a city in eastern China.

The Zhejiang province’s capital city is the latest to benefit from Azalea’s broadband wireless solution, which is expected to provide online access for municipal officials and customers of Huashu Digital Television Company.

California-based Azalea is a provider of wireless network equipment and technology. The company offers network intelligence to its broadband wireless mesh infrastructure through a wireless routing technology that sets new standards in price and performance.

This latest announcement is part of a series of wireless deployments for the company in major Chinese metropolitan areas in 2008. Earlier, the company deployed its solutions in Beijing, Shanghai and Yangzhou.

In May, government officials in Yangzhou announced the initial phase of a wireless broadband network throughout the city. The “Wireless Yangzhou” project is a joint effort, managed and deployed by China Unicom (News - Alert) and Azalea Networks

Azalea’s wireless Hangzhou network is expected to provide wireless coverage in key areas including major highways and tourist venues. “Azalea’s unique wireless mesh solution will provide Hangzhou government officials with the wireless communications they need,” said John Elms, chief executive officer at Azalea Networks.

He also said that the deployment gives Huashu the flexibility to offer future services to its customer base, adding that this opens the door to quick return on investment for Huashu as a service provider.

The project is part of a major undertaking by the Hangzhou Municipal Government in 2008. The primary application will be to serve police and public safety personnel.

However, company officials said that the scalability of the Azalea solution will allow it to be used to deliver services to customers of Huashu Digital Television. The company is a cable television provider in China

Terms of the deal call on Azalea to provide its wireless routing equipment and provide technical support throughout the deployment.

This year in July, Azalea announced an agreement with WAV, a distributor of wireless, security, to distribute Azalea’s network intelligent broadband wireless infrastructure products.
