Nortel Boosts China Cable Television Network's Digital TV Broadcasting Capacity

Seeking to meet increasing demand for sports programming, China Cable Television Network reportedly has upgraded its bandwidth capabilities with a Metro Ethernet solution from Nortel (News - Alert).
 
The solution is designed to help CCTN subscribers enjoy digital TV services with higher quality services.
 
In addition to providing improved quality, the digital TV also provides a wide range of content for providers to offer customers. Nortel has a history of optical networking innovation which egged on CCTN to cost-effectively boost the broadcaster’s backbone with its Metro Ethernet solution.
 
The company now has the Metro Ethernet solution with the necessary bandwidth to support current and future digital broadcasting needs. Providing a competitive edge in China’s cable TV market, CCTN’s additional network capacity will help it to expand its content and viewer base.
 
Nortel’s Metro Ethernet Network portfolio features CCTN’s network. This includes the Optical Multi-service Edge 6500. The OME 6500 consolidates layers of networking, functions, and platforms by utilizing Nortel innovations, such as fully tunable transponders equipped with electronic Dynamically Compensating Optics, the company will look to provide flexible, scalable and highly reliable Metro Ethernet services with this.
 
CCTN used a Nortel Metro Ethernet solution, based on 10G DWDM technology, because the company was facing rapidly-increasing demand for coverage of major sporting events and other popular programming. With the partnership, the company was able to increase network capacity significantly and allow delivery of more channels at higher quality.
 
“Digital TV has sparked a revolution in home entertainment by giving viewers more programming than ever – but it has also forced broadcasters to substantially upgrade core networks to ensure they can meet customers’ insatiable demand for bandwidth,” said Jackson Wu, president of Nortel China. “Nortel’s Metro Ethernet solutions allow broadcasters to react quickly to changing customer requirements, while maintaining a consistent network management system that lets operators focus less on technical issues and more on delivering the content their viewers want.”
