Internap Solutoins to Help Synacor Consolidate Production Networks

By Arvind Arora, TMCnet Contributor

Internap (News - Alert) Network Services Corporation, a company offering end-to-end Internet business solutions, reportedly has announced that its ‘triple play’ of Content Delivery Network, Performance IP Networking and data center colocation is powering the underlying infrastructure for Synacor (News - Alert), Inc.

Synacor, an Internet tools and portal company for the cable and telecommunications industries, has deployed Internap’s bundled solution to consolidate eight production networks into one global Internet platform.

Based in Buffalo, New York, Synacor serves companies such as Time Warner (News - Alert) Cable, Cox Communications, Embarq, WOW! and Charter Communications, and works in association with more than 30 premium content providers, including CNN, HBO, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, the National Hockey League and Showtime.

More than 40 million end-users around the world, stretching across seven time zones, use portals and Internet applications from Synacor.

Internap’s CDN enables Synacor to stream movie trailers and promotions for television shows while leveraging Internap’s Performance IP for administrative applications, as a reliable backup to legacy network services.

Synacor will move several hundred blade servers into Internap’s secured, high-density power data center space, where they will be integrated with Internap’s network services, as part of this implementation.

Adam Howell, director of networks and IT operations for Synacor, said that being a high-growth business, the company could not afford the intermittent network reliability, low-power data center space and price escalations found with some providers.

Howell said that Synacor evaluated 26 data centers in seven states before selecting Internap. Switching to Internap is the most important IP operations project Synacor will complete this year, Howell said.

Tim Sullivan (News - Alert), chief technology officer at Internap, said that the powerful network services and engineering resources offered by the company provide an Internet platform for Synacor, enabling it to consolidate and optimize its IT infrastructure.
