Zayo Group Acquires Network Assets from Adesta Communications Secured Creditor Trust

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Zayo Group has signed an agreement to acquire network assets in Colorado, New Jersey and Illinois from the Adesta Communications Secured Creditor Trust. This acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Zayo’s presence in Chicago and New Jersey will be improved by the additional assets included in the agreement. The assets in New Jersey will provide redundant connectivity from the cable landing stations n Tuckerton and Manasquan to regional fiber routes. Zayo Group is a regional provider of telecom services such as bandwidth, voice and managed services to carrier, enterprise, small to medium-sized business (SMB) and government customers.

The current network of Zayo covers 18,700 metro and regional fiber route miles and serves up to 1,200 on-net locations in 20 states and 125 markets. The current acquisition of network assets will bring an additional 327 metro and regional route miles of conduit and fiber to Zayo’s network. The majority of this network is in Colorado which also includes 130 route miles in the Denver metro area. This network is very close to a majority of central offices, carrier hotels and neutral collocation facilities in the Denver metro area.

“Ownership of this key underlying network within and surrounding Denver positions Zayo to serve future needs for fiber-based bandwidth throughout Colorado’s Front Range,” said John Scarano, COO of Zayo Group and president of Zayo Bandwidth (News - Alert), in a statement. “Additional investment will be made to develop these assets into one of Zayo’s fiber based metro markets.” Strong financial backing is provided to Zayo Group by five experienced telecom and internet investors: Battery Ventures, Columbia Capital, Centennial Ventures, MC Venture Partners and Oak Investment Partners.

The Zayo Group is based in Louisville, Colorado. It consists of three business units: Zayo Bandwidth, Onvoy Voice Services and Zayo Managed Services.

Zayo Bandwidth offers fiber-based bandwidth services for carriers, technology companies, government, education, health care, financial service companies and other entities with growing needs for bandwidth.

Onvoy Voice Services provide tandem switched access, long distance, SS7, directory assistance and operator services to LECs and other communications providers.

Zayo Managed Services enable private and public sector companies to avoid self-managing voice, video and data services by deploying and managing those services for its customers.
