Belden Expands Industrial Ethernet Cable Products

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

Belden reportedly is expanding its industrial Ethernet cable family with a new IP-complaint Category 6 DataTuff Twisted Pair Cable.

The new cable, with its round construction, is designed for sealed Industrial Ethernet connectivity applications. A manufacturer of signal transmission products, Belden focuses on products for specialty electronics and data networking markets.

The product was developed using patented Bonded-Pair technology, which consists of a twisted pair construction that bonds the conductor insulation of each pair along their longitudinal axes.

The process is designed to ensure that the conductor pairs do not develop performance-robbing gaps between them. Since the bonded pair cables maintain a uniform conductor-to-conductor spacing or concentricity, reliable electrical performance is guaranteed both before and after installation which has been named Installable Performance. The cable – shown above – consists of a solid bare copper conductor and a heavy-duty oil and sunlight resistant jacket.

Data transmission cables are being used in manufacturing or processing plants to carry signals between controllers or controllers to devices. Since the signals that make events happen under a pre-defined schedule, a cabling infrastructure that can support industrial Ethernet is required.

Belden officials say their industrial Ethernet cable family contains oil, chemical and moisture resistant cables that can withstand extreme temperature variations. The DataTuff copper-based Category 5e and Category 6 cables and TrayOptic Indoor-Outdoor Fiber Optic cables are members of this family. These cables provide stable electrical performance with less attenuation and greater resistance to EMI/RFI (News - Alert). They also provide resistance to UV radiation and contain enough mechanical stability to withstand pulling forces, abrasion, crushing, cut-through and burial.

Along with its Category 6 DataTuff Twisted Pair Cable, Belden also released its new Industrial Ethernet User Guide. This 16 page guide contains information about differences in performance between commercial off-the-shelf Ethernet components and industrial-grade components from Belden. An at-a-glance Cable Selection Guide as well as information on the nine critical tests that help to prove the advantages of Belden industrial-grade cables over COTS cables has also been included.
