D-Link Intros Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit for Extending the Home Network

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

D-Link has introduced a Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit which can use existing coaxial wiring in the home for delivering fast and stable connections for network extension. This can cover various entertainment devices in different rooms without disturbing the cable service.

The D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit (DXN-221) will be showcased at this week’s CES (News - Alert) 2009 in Las Vegas. It is most suitable for adding bandwidth-intensive applications like high-definition (HD) media streaming, music sharing and online multi-player gaming to the home network.

The kit has two adapters each with an Ethernet port and a Coaxial F-type connector for bridging the two adapters together. The adapters are available for purchase separately as well.

The D-Link (News - Alert) Coax Ethernet Adapter can be connected to the router and then connected to any coaxial outlet at home. This enables network and Internet access to many rooms at the same time. The second adapter can be used to connect Ethernet-enabled devices like PCs and media players in another room. The DXN-221 can be used in rooms with many devices using a switch to connect all the devices.

One of the adapters comes from the home network router through an Ethernet cable and gets connected to a coaxial cable near it. The second one can be present at any location inside the house near another coaxial cable. This can be plugged into an Ethernet-ready device to network switch and connect to multiple devices. This technology suits point-to-multipoint networks also where multiple adapters can be placed any where at home for making connections in any room which has a coaxial outlet.

The Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit suits home networking and it does not require new wiring to be done. The device and the existing coaxial cabling will extend the network to the entertainment center which has all the network-capable devices such as gaming consoles, DVRs and media players.

“With simplified user setup, coaxial networking support, the ability to coexist with other coaxial devices, and fast networking speeds, our Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit delivers a simplified networking solution that makes it easy for consumers to enjoy the benefits of a digital home designed for high-definition media streaming, online gaming and other emerging applications,” said AJ Wang, chief technical officer for D-Link.

Wang continued, “The technology is fast and a natural complement to our popular networking solutions for moving data into areas of a home where it may be difficult to run a cable or achieve a strong Wi-Fi signal.”

The D-Link Coax Ethernet Adapter Kit is Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) certified and can coexist with other technologies present at home. MoCA certified products can seamlessly deliver HDTV and DVD quality entertainment and high-speed data with no interference. The frequency range of operation for such devices is 800-1500 MHz. This eliminates interference with other products like cable TV.
