Cable & Wireless Selects Italtel for Network Upgrade

By Narayan Bhat, TMCnet Contributor

Italy’s voice network solution provider Italtel (News - Alert) has announced that it had been selected as prime supplier to expand Cable & Wireless’ Voice over IP (VoIP) infrastructure through Voice Transit Evolution (VTE), a Next Generation Network (NGN) solution.

VTE will use an Italtel open softswitch platform and third-party Media Gateways to transform Cable & Wireless (News - Alert) legacy voice network with a new all-IP-Telephony core.

Analysts believe the deployment expands the capacity of Cable & Wireless’ TDM voice networks, making way for integration amongst all of Cable & Wireless’ existing and next generation voice platforms.

Technically, VTE allows Cable & Wireless to migrate its legacy TDM access switches over to all-IP switches incrementally over time, on an as-needed basis.

The upgraded network will enable the wireless operator to tide over the increasing customer demand. Moreover, it enables customers take advantage of the existing Cable & Wireless Multi Service Platform (MSP), a high-bandwidth IP core network, allowing for high bandwidth applications including Fixed Mobile Convergence (News - Alert), IPCCTV and digital signage.

It fulfills the requirement for a single Softswitch platform for both VoIP and Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) capabilities, and allows for integrated local switching, transit, TDM interconnect and VoIP interconnect functions, to deliver maximum network efficiencies.

”This partnership enables Cable & Wireless to rebuild the core of our legacy voice network with a new all-IP-Telephony network. We have built this network to enable quick integration for other recently acquired legacy voice networks,” said Andy Evans, CTO, Cable & Wireless Europe, Asia and U.S.

Cable & Wireless provides enterprise and carrier solutions to larger users of telecoms services in the UK, U.S. and Asia.

The Italtel Group, which designs, develops and implements next generation multiservice integrated network systems, recorded a turnover of 543.4 million euro in the fiscal year for 2007.
