By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

Silicon solutions provider Entropic Communications, Inc. is extending its collaboration agreement with Cavium Networks, a provider of semiconductor products. This broad-based collaboration is aimed at offering high performance Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA)-enabled home networking solutions.

Since 2001, Entropic (News - Alert) has been working on MoCA-related technology and the company is already in the process of shipping its second generation of MoCA-compliant products. MoCA is an open, industry driven program that promotes the distribution of digital video and entertainment through existing coaxial cable in the home.

MoCA technology is widely adopted today with the increasing household consumption of digital entertainment. The technology acts as the major strength for whole home entertainment networks of multiple wired and wireless products.

By working together, both Entropic and Cavium have reportedly produced optimized reference designs that is said to deliver service-rich, high-performance solutions at compelling cost points and power levels to address the needs of service providers.

Customer premise equipment (CPE) products based on Entropic/Cavium reference designs are stated to be ideally suited for fiber-to-the-home Internet and IPTV (News - Alert) service deployments.

“Our partnership with Cavium showcases what can be accomplished when two industry leaders work together,'' said Patrick Henry, chief executive officer of Entropic Communications.

“The result is a product that provides value greater than simply the sum of the individual parts. We look forward to working with Cavium on future product collaborations that will push the performance, features and capabilities of the MoCA home network even further,” added Henry.

Together, the companies have produced a second-generation reference design which is the combination of Entropic's EN2510 and Cavium's CN50XX products.

The second generation reference design will be MoCA 1.1 ready and will possess the bandwidth and processing speeds to handle multiple streams of high definition (HD) video in addition to other network traffic such as gaming, music streaming, data and Internet content providing consumers with a seamless home entertainment network.

The current agreement signed by both Entropic and Cavium which extends their current collaboration is aimed at delivering a third generation solution with enhanced new features and capabilities to meet the future needs of their service provider customers.

Key additions, as reported by the companies, will include the incorporation of Cavium's PureVu video processing technology that will enable distribution of full HD 1080p60 interactive gaming and video within the home from any video or game source to any display in the home using existing cable wiring over MoCA.

“Cavium Networks (News - Alert) is committed to delivering compelling processor solutions for the Digital Home that enable seamless delivery of voice, video and data content from any source device to any display within the home,'' said Syed Ali, president and chief executive officer at Cavium Networks.

“We will continue to bring innovative solutions to market that incorporate our growing IP portfolio to continuously enhance the performance of solutions for the home while aggressively driving down cost and power,” added Ali.
