Comcast Launches High-Speed Internet Service in California

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Comcast (News - Alert), a provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services, is all set to launch Extreme 50 Mbps high-speed Internet service in Central California and Santa Barbara County.

According to Comcast officials, the company has begun its rollout of wideband service in these areas. The company previously deployed wideband in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Monterey-Salinas area earlier this year.

Company officials said that, with wideband, Comcast has introduced a new echelon of Internet speed tiers, which will redefine the customer experience online and create a platform for Internet innovation in the years ahead.

Wideband also enables Comcast to double speeds for the majority of existing high-speed Internet customers.

"Wideband utilizes our existing fiber-optic network in neighborhoods across our footprint,” Steve White, senior vice president of Comcast's California Region, said. “With this next generation of service, our customers' online experience is dramatically enhanced.”

White said that this is just the beginning. Wideband, combined with the fiber-optic network, gives the company the capability of meeting the needs of the customers for many years to come by offering even faster speeds in the future.

Company officials also said that, as part of the wideband deployment, Comcast is launching two new premium speed tiers to its residential and business class customers. Both new services are ideal for households or businesses simultaneously using several computers or Internet-connected devices.

With 23.9 million cable customers, 15.3 million high-speed Internet customers, and 7.0 million Comcast Digital Voice customers, Comcast is principally involved in the development, management and operation of cable systems and in the delivery of programming content.

In September, Comcast launched a 100 Mbps high-speed Internet service to businesses in the Twin Cities region.  For the first time, Comcast is offering business customers one of the fastest broadband services available in the U.S. today: up to 100 Megabits per second downloads and up to 15 Mbps uploads.

The service is another demonstration of the power of Comcast’s deployment of next-generation DOCSIS 3.0 technology, which sets a new standard for delivering high-speed Internet service across fiber-optic networks.  The technology, also referred to as wideband, will enable Comcast to continue to deliver progressively faster speeds well into the future.
