Thomson WiFi Gateways in Compliance with Newly Ratified IEEE Standard

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributor

Thomson, a provider of solutions for the creation, management, delivery and access of content for the communication, media and entertainment industries, announced recently that its new generation WiFi (News - Alert)-enabled cable gateways are fully compatible with the newly ratified 802.11n wireless technology standard by IEEE.

The IEEE Standards Association is a globally recognized standards-setting body, which has been developing consensus standard through an open process that sets specifications and best practices based on current scientific and technological knowledge. Recently the association has announced ratification of the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11n-2009, defining mechanisms that provide significantly improved data rates and ranges for wireless local area networks (WLANs).

“Industry standards have always been critical for Thomson (News - Alert), as they are for the success of the new digital environment and the networked home,” said Pascal Portelli, vice president Gateways & Connected Devices of Thomson, in a release.

“Wherever possible, as in the development of WiFi 802.11n draft 2.0, Thomson will always take a proactive role in the specification of standards to ensure that the resulting format is beneficial to all parties through the ready interconnection of equipment from multiple vendors,” Portelli added.

Earlier this year, the company had launched a new range of 802.11n gateways, certified by the WiFi alliance as draft 2.0, which enabled service providers to offer multiple services to the networked home including high quality video over wireless.

This current announcement from the company has further assured that future home networking equipment will be in compliance with these devices.

Thomson claims that its range of Wireless products is in conjunction with DOCSIS 3.0 or EuroDOCSIS 3.0, thereby delivering a very fast and convenient solution for cable operators. The company’s product portfolio includes the TCW770 DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 3.0 wireless cable gateway and TWG870 wireless Voice gateway for the European market as well as the DCW775 DOCSIS 3.0 wireless cable gateway and DWG875 DOCSIS 3.0 wireless Voice gateway for the U.S. market.
