By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Harmonic, a solutions provider for delivering live and on-demand video to TVs, PCs and mobile devices, has stated that cable operator Insight Communications has completed a widespread network upgrade using Harmonic’s (News - Alert) digital video technologies.

The solutions used for the upgrade include SD and HD encoders with integrated video/audio re-encoding technology and distributed statistical multiplexing. Harmonic officials said in a release that the company’s fully integrated, IP-based solutions enable Insight to reduce capital expenses, power consumption, and system operating costs. The company delivers unmatched video quality and an expanded service portfolio.

Harmonic has provided system integration and commissioning services for this project, which included system upgrades in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. Insight's Digital 5.0 service, which features over 330 channels and a crystal clear HD line-up of up to 58 channels run using Harmonic’s solutions.

Insight uses Harmonic's NSG 9000 universal edgeQAMs to power its on-demand offering of over 7,500 titles monthly, as well as NMX Digital Service Manager to manage the complete video network infrastructure.

The Network Services Gateway (News - Alert) 9000 is a high density edgeQAM system, capable of scaling to 144 QAM RF outputs per unit. The system serves as a highly integrated digital video gateway, capable of multiplexing on-demand content streamed over an IP network.

NMX Digital Service Manager monitors and controls the hardware and software infrastructure in a way that parallels the business view as a series of service. Services are easily manipulated, formed into transports and monitored. With NMX, Insight will have a simple and intuitive interface for creating and modifying channel lineups in addition to setting their parameters, whether encoding or rate-shaping.

In the release, Abraham Naghibi, VP of Insight Communications, said the company is delighted by the great video quality of Harmonic's compression and stream processing solutions. This upgrade is an investment in a fully IP-based infrastructure that can seamlessly support their recently expanded digital cable service.

Insight is highly-regarded throughout the U.S. cable industry for its market leadership and it was an early provider of VOD services in the U.S. Harmonic's solution set provides Insight with unparalleled flexibility, outstanding value and best service.

Recently, Harmonic unveiled its SUPRALink 1550 NM DWDM solution and Broadcast Equipment India deployed Harmonic's Ellipse.
