Time Warner Cable Imparts Technology with Innovative Program

By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor

Continuing its operations across the country, Time Warner (News - Alert) continues to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math, referred to as STEM.

The “Connect a million minds” program aims to inspire students to develop skills in STEM, and create an awareness that without these skills, students would find it difficult to compete in a global economy.

After completing the first of the curriculum “Create,” hands-on, participants move to the “Transmit” area.

This area educates students about the behavior of radio waves  and how they are used to carry digital signals over the air and into space. By creating a coding system for transmitting information to a receiving station and increasing their comprehension of geosynchronous orbit, more than 1,500 students participating in the program will gain a deeper understanding of how their favorite television programs reach them.

All  this is as part of the company’s newly created, signature technology curriculum “Cracking the Codes in the Digital World.”

“It is easy to forget how technology driven watching television actually is,” Bonnie Hathaway, Vice President, Public Affairs, Time Warner Cable, said. The new program was aimed at dispelling the notion that kids entertained that the images were inside the box, and would be displayed at the push of a couple of buttons.

Susan Warner, Senior Director, Public Affairs, said, “It is amazing to watch the interest that this curriculum generates in young people, and that interest not only motivates the kids to think about STEM in a different way, but also gets the Time Warner Cable employee/mentors excited as well.”

Participants of the Time Warner curriculum will understand how cable television signals are created and received, and also how they are transmitted, The program aligns with the company’s mission to connect people and businesses with information, entertainment, and each other in ways that are simple and easy.

Time Warner Cable Business Class offers a suite of phone, Internet, Ethernet and cable television services to businesses of all sizes. Time Warner Cable Media Sales, the advertising arm of Time Warner Cable, offers national, regional and local companies innovative advertising solutions that are targeted and affordable.

Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds is a five-year, $100 million venture.“The Connectory”, a one-of-a-kind online resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find informal science and technology learning opportunities in their communities; and grants to support non-profit organizations that bring stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to students.
