RFMD Announces GHz Broadband Transmission Products

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributor

RF Micro Devices (RFMD (News - Alert)) has announced new GHz broadband transmission products, RFPD2580; RFPP2590; and RFOS601x, to enable bandwidth-driven services for CATV operators and their subscribers.

For the cable operators, the new products provide options to upgrade network infrastructure to 1.2GHz, enhancing network performance and providing bandwidth for growing broadcast and narrowcast services such as high definition television (HDTV) and emerging 3D HDTV.

RFPD2580 is a power doubler amplifier that uses RFMD's GaN technology to achieve 22.5dB gain at 1.2GHz and best-in-class signal output capability, while RFPP2590 is a hybrid push-pull amplifier module that delivers "extremely" low distortion and consumes 240mA from a 24V supply.

Company officials said that RFPP2590 is a companion part to the RFPD2580. The two products combine to optimize performance in CATV line extender amplifiers deployed in CATV distribution networks.

An optical receiver module, RFOS601x has been designed for use in hybrid fiber coax (HFC) optical nodes, which reside at the edge of the fiber network to convert light into electrical signals for transmission to CATV set-top boxes and home routers.

Company officials said that the low distortion of the RFOS601x enables "fiber-deep" networks, in which the optical network is extended closer to the CATV subscriber. This supports higher data rates and addresses the increasing demand for high bandwidth video and broadband services.

RFMD designs and manufactures high-performance RF components and compound semiconductor technologies. The company's products enable worldwide mobility, provide enhanced connectivity and support advanced functionality in the cellular handset, wireless infrastructure, wireless local area network (WLAN), CATV/broadband and aerospace and defense markets.

Earlier last month, the company introduced ML2730, a single-chip fully integrated Frequency Shift Keyed (FSK) transceiver with integrated power amplifier (PA) and low noise amplifier (LNA). The ML2730 expands RFMD's portfolio of ISM band single-chip transceivers, covering 900 MHz, 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz.
