By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Dolby Laboratories (News - Alert), a dealer in audio technologies and systems, and National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) have forged a partnership to make the industry’s first cinema quality 3D feed utilizing a cable set-top box presented in a digital movie environment enabled with Dolby 3D.

According to Dolby, Dolby 3D Digital Cinema is an extension of Dolby Digital Cinema, a powerful, flexible, and reliable technology. Dolby 3D Digital Cinema ensures that audiences enjoy a richer, more compelling 3D experience, with realistic color and a sharper, clearer image from every seat in the house.

Dolby has claimed that it has utilized its expertise from content creation and digital cinema exhibition to TV broadcasts and broadcast devices in order to deliver the knowhow to demonstrate the potential of future 3D broadcasts.

Walt Husak, Director of Image Technology at Dolby Laboratories has commented that the NCTA (News - Alert) screening facility allows viewers to enjoy some of the best and most current cable programming, and Dolby is proud to have played an integral role. Their rich heritage is built upon years of enabling new possibilities and delivering novel solutions that provide premium entertainment to viewers.

Dolby Labs has stated that Dolby 3D was recently installed at the NCTA theater and its 3D display efficiency was demonstrated with the broadcast of ESPN’s 3D coverage of the recently concluded 2010 FIFA World Cup. The content was delivered through Comcast (News - Alert) STB and then it was split into left and right eye stereoscopic image through a Doremi format converter. The converted signal was then channeled through an image processing unit into a Christie digital cinema projector equipped with Dolby 3D. Audiences present at the NCTA theater for the first time viewed 1080p 3D content.

Mark Bell, vice president of industry affairs at NCTA has exclaimed that they are grateful for Dolby's expertise and support in enabling NCTA's theater for the World Cup and other exciting 3D cable programming offerings to their industry and to policymakers here in Washington. With Dolby's cutting-edge technology, NCTA's digital cinema can now display brilliant 1080 3D images.
