Redback Completes Multi-Technology, Multi-Service Network Testing for Backhaul, Video/Voice and Business Broadband Services

SAN JOSE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Redback Networks Inc., an Ericsson company (NASDAQ: ERIC) and a market leader for multi-service edge routers and carrier Ethernet transport, today announced it has completed a successful series of multi-service carrier Ethernet-based tests conducted at the European Advanced Networking Test Center (EANTC).

The EANTC's network tests demonstrated Carrier Ethernet's suitability for transport and aggregation, with multi-vendor interoperability in the metro and access networks an essential proof-point. Carrier Ethernet and IP/MPLS capabilities are key to service providers' abilities to deliver a variety of cost-effective and reliable services.

Successful interoperability tests help to provide a multi-vendor platform infrastructure that is optimised, efficient and upgradeable. The delivery of business services such as Virtual LANs and triple play require Carrier Ethernet and IP/MPLS based infrastructure. Carrier Ethernet provides aggregation and transport and IP/MPLS allows traffic engineering, enabling carriers to design an efficient and optimised infrastructure. Together, these technologies will provide the level of reliability expected from vendors and form a forecast combined market of over $12 billion by 2011 (Infonetics Research).

Redback's participation in the EANTC event focused on delivery of services at the edge of the MPLS core and the reliable delivery of data such as video and mobile backhaul from the access to the core. A variety of tests were conducted that clearly demonstrated the Redback platform's ability to deliver Ethernet services while interoperating with other independent network segments. Placed at the most critical point in the network, the core edge, Redback's SmartEdge(R) multi-service edge router (MSER) performed outstandingly and maintained connectivity throughout the ensuing EANTC tests.

"Carrier Ethernet deployed with IP/MPLS is clearly gaining momentum. Support for these two technologies is going to be essential for a foreseeable future," said Carsten Rossenhoevel, Managing Director of EANTC. "This time we verified that reliable connections can be created and maintained across different metro technologies for delivery of a variety of lucrative services."

"We believe that Ethernet service transport and IP/MPLS are the future. Therefore, we regularly participate in interoperability tests to assure our customers that Redback is committed to providing end to end reliable solutions with our natural partners," said, Simon Williams, Sr. VP of Products, Marketing and Strategy at Redback Networks. "The SmartEdge multi-service router is a highly versatile product and these tests have demonstrated its ability to create, maintain and repair end-to-end connectivity for delivering advanced data, voice and video services."

Redback joined 27 other network hardware companies in the interoperability tests featuring more than 100 devices. The tests were organized by EANTC and Redback SmartEdge MSER was tested to demonstrate interoperability of advanced Carrier Ethernet and MPLS network services in a resilient and scalable inter-carrier scenario. The multi-vendor network supported a multitude of consumer and business services. The results will be showcased this week at the Carrier Ethernet World Congress in Berlin, Germany.
