GTA Joins Consortium to Build State-of-the-Art Underwater Cable SystemTAMUNING, Guam --(Business Wire)-- A consortium of seven telecommunications companies which includes GTA (News - Alert), has signed a contract with NEC Corporation to develop a state-of-the art, 15,000-Km trans-Pacific underwater cable system. The consortium, in addition to GTA, includes PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), Globe Telecom (News - Alert), RAM Telecom International (RTI), Hawaiian Telcom, GTI Corporation (a member of the Globe Telecom group of companies), and Telkom USA. "Guam continues to be an important and strategic location for submarine cables," said Robert Haulbrook, president and CEO of GTA. He added, "SEA-US system will be an important asset for future growth by allowing operators like GTA to secure future requirements for capacity demands. We're excited by the opportunity this presents, and we are pleased to be developing strong working relationships with other members of the consortium such as P.T. Telekomuikasi, the largest telecom operator in Indonesia, and Globe, the second largest mobile and fixed operator in the Philippines." The Southeast Asia-United States (SEA-US) cable system will comprise two independent segments: SEA-US East, linking Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Guam; and SEA-US West, linking Guam to the Philippines and Indonesia. Construction of SEA-US is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2016 at a project cost of approximately $250 million. SEA-US will provide superior latency, deliver an additional 20 Terabits per second of capacity, and utilize the latest 100 Gigabit per second transmission equipment for the first time in a system in excess of 10,000km. The new facility will address the needs for enhanced communications capabilities along the Asia-U.S. route as well as provide much-needed redundancy. The added capacity will also support high bandwidth broadband services in other Asia regions, including North Asia, China and Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and Australia. About GTA GTA provides complete communications services in Guam. These include local and long distance telephone service; wireless; DSL Internet access; advanced digital television, or IPTV (News - Alert); and carrier-class data circuits. The company also operates a data center in Guam for offering business data storage and managed wide-area networking. Based in Tamuning, Guam, GTA is privately owned and locally managed.
