AT&T U-Verse Brings More Live Channels to Mobile Application

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

AT&T (News - Alert) is already considered one of the most popular cable television providers around, according to a recent survey. Now the company is trying to capture the mobile TV viewing market with a recent upgrade to its U-verse mobile application. The U-verse application now offers the ability to watch more than 100 channels on almost any Android (News - Alert) or iOS device.

AT&T has been working hard over the last few years to establish itself as more of a presence in the Internet world. The company was once the king of the smartphone market when it was the sole provider of Apple’s iPhone (News - Alert). Now that more carriers are able to sell various generations of the iPhone, the company is looking to carve out a new niche.

Mobile access for U-verse customers is just one step in AT&T’s plan to become a larger presence on the Internet. Earlier this month, the firm announced that it was launching the very first all-fiber broadband network in Austin, Texas. AT&T U-verse customers are reportedly going to be seeing faster Internet speeds almost immediately and the company says speeds on the network will be great than 1 GB per second by the middle of next year.

That can only be good news for people who want to be able to watch their U-verse programming anywhere in their homes. AT&T says that there are a limited number of channels that will also be offered when users are away from their home networks. In addition to live television programming, the application will give access to movies and television shows on demand, as well as work as a replacement for the regular remote. Customers will be able to search for shows on their tablet or smartphone and direct their DVRs to record programs they want to save for later.

Chief marketing officer for AT&T Home Solutions, Mel Coker, talked about the benefits of the new upgrades in a recent release, saying, “By making live TV content available across devices we're enabling our customers to watch TV on their terms when and where they want it. U-verse has always been about delivering a TV experience built around our customers, and this enhancement gives them even more flexibility and control."
